Damien Scott Scores in Wildcat Debut: Harrelson helps 'All-Stars' Win

3, 2, 1 you take the last shot...its the finals...swish...every players dream to win it all for his team. For most kids it would be to the likes of the Lakers or Celtics, but for most Western Australia juniors that would be in a Perth Wildcats jersey. On Saturday night in Wanneroo, Damien Scott put on the red and black number 8 jersey in an exhibition game against the Lightning 'All-Stars'; a team made up of several SBL players and professionals including Anthony Tolliver of the Minnesota Timberwolves (NBA). It was Scott's third game to suit up but he had yet to see the court. It didn't take long for Wildcat Coach Rob Beveridge to put in the Cockburn youngster in first half and 'Damo' took advantage of the opportunity. On his first touch Scott made a quick crossover, he then used a screen by team-mate Luke Nevill to drive to a mid-range pull up over the 'All-Stars' Tolliver. The rest is history, Scott hit the bottom of the net and tallied the first 2 points of what looks to be a promising career. Not to stop there Damo grabbed an offensive rebound and kicked it out to Kevin Lisch who scored on the play. It was just 3:29 of playing time for Scott as he battles it out for a permanent position on the Wildcats roster. If tonight was any indication, the Cockburn fans could see there talent taking game winning shots someday, to win the NBL finals. 'It is an honour to play for the Wildcats, " Scott said with a smile. "I was ready when they called on me to go in." Tonight Scott certainly made Cockburn Basketball proud.

After winning the first 2 of the 3 game series the Wildcats fell to the 'All-Stars' (111-92). Star import Kevin Lisch led the Wildcats with 28 points.Tolliver led all scorers with 31 points and 14 rebounds. Cockburn Cougar guard Ty Harrelson ('All-Stars) had his most productive outing, making 8 of 13 shots for 19 points, 4 rebounds, and three assists. "It was a great opportunity for me to represent the Cougars, and a pleasure to play with the team and coaching staff. I am thankful to the people who picked me to play and what they stand for. I really look forward to watching the Wildcats this season." Harrelson said.

This is a fantastic improvement, and a result of the hard work put in by the players, coaches and administrators. Well done to both the Men's and Women's programs.

Pass Scores Player of the Week Honours

    From www.sbl.asn.au

"Week Twelve "PowerPlayers" of the Week Metropolis Fremantle Cockburn Cougars Forward Emma Pass has won her first PowerPlayer of the Week award of the season after leading her team to one win and one narrow loss in a double header over the weekend. Pass edged out Lakeside Lightning’s Courtney Bayliss who led her team to 91-49 win over the lowly South West Slammers to keep her side with a chance of making the top-eight. Pass was a dominant force with 18 points and 14 rebounds as her side beat the Eagles 63-53, and then tried gallantly to pull out a win over the Wolves with 25 points and seven rebounds, but her side went down by one point, 67-66."

Cockburn Cougars Import guard Ty Harrelson has claimed his first PowerPlayer of the Week award of the season after helping guide his team to a win over ATD Stirling Senators to keep his team in the top two on the SBL standings. Harrelson edged out Perth Redbacks forward Adrian Majstrovich to claim the Week Fourteen $50 voucher to PowerPlay Sports in Osborne Park. Harrelson scored 23 points, grabbed eight rebounds, 11 assists and recorded 10 steals to receive a ‘triple-double’ as his side beat the Senators 112-105 for their 14th win of the season.

    Cougars Defend Their Den

Home court advantage has been good to the Cougars SBL squads this season. The men are 8-1 and the women are 6-1 when playing at home, which is the combined best record in the whole league. On Saturday night the winning continued against the Stirling Senators. The Lady Cougars erased a nine point halftime deficit to win their tenth game of the season. Leading the way Kara Hargreaves scored 19 points followed by a great defensive effort and a timely mid range jumper from Kristen Everard who finished with 7 steals on the night. Not to be outdone by her sister, Courtney Hargreaves pitched in a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Head Coach Fleur McIntyre along with Assistants Simon Daff and Nick Barry brought out a new defensive scheme in the second half which stymied the opponents. The Senators could only manage 13 points in the entire 2nd half. In men’s action the Cougars would hold off a big 2nd half rally by the Stirling men to hang on to a 112-105 victory. The Cougars led the entire way with Slammin’ Stan Ocitti’s 26 point 11 rebound double-double.

Ty Harrelson completed a rare triple double and missed a very unusual quadruple double when he scored 23 points, 11 assists, 10 steals, and grabbed 8 rebounds. Damien Scott (17 points), Sheldon McIntyre (15), Ned Longley (13 points) and Grant “Wizard of Oz” Davey (12) rounded out the balanced attack for the Cougars. Lee Roberts was best for Stirling with 42 points and 21 rebounds. Now, the men have all but sealed a playoff spot with a month left in the regular season. Next week the Cougars do battle at East Perth before returning to the Cougar Den on Saturday night where they play host to two tough Lakeside Lightning squads. The women will tip-off at 6pm followed by the men at 8pm.

    Cougars Hold Off Buccs

Cockburn Cougars pulled off a 84-77 road win in what coach Stephen Charlton called his biggest win since arriving in the 2010 SBL season. “We had a couple injuries, but the guys who played tonight played hard the entire 48 minutes. It’s the biggest win since I have been coaching the Cougars.” Guard Steven Van Lit started the game off with two quick three point shots and Cockburn never lost the lead. Slammin’ Stan Ocitti 25 points, 10 rebounds) and Sheldon McIntyre (19 pts, 13reb) posted double doubles for the winning side.

The Cougars moved to 13-5 on the season and maintained their 2nd spot on the league ladder. On June 18th the Cougars will host the Stirling Senators with the women’s game starting at 6pm followed by the men. Both teams look to qualify for the playoffs with just 8 games remaining in the regular season.

    Lady Cougars Stomp Redbacks

It took all forty minutes of regulation and another five minutes of overtime for the Lady Cougars SBL side to defeat the Perth Redbacks in a big road victory at the Oasis in Belmont. With a game that changed leads repeatedly, the Cougars poured on the scoring in the extra time (15-6) and took one more step towards finals. Import Emma Pass scored 20 points and had 10 rebounds and found major support from Kara Hargreaves (20 pts) and Courtney Hargreaves contributed a double-double with 13 pts and 12 reb.
The Refuse to Lose mentality took over in the final minutes as the Cougars trailed by two points with 16 seconds when Emma Pass tied the game with a 2 point shot. Then Kara Hargreaves drew an offensive foul on a Redback player sending the game to overtime. In the overtime Courtney Hargreaves poured in 9 of her 13 points to lead the women to 5th place on the ladder. In Men’s SBL action the Redbacks revenged an earlier season loss to the Cougars as they won 92-83. The Cougars were led by Stan Ocitti who poured in a game high 32 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. On his birthday Ocitti did everything he could but the Redbacks held off the Cougars in the final minutes. Sheldon McIntyre scored 12 points. The Redbacks made 22 of 31 free throws while the Cougars just made 11 of 15. Cockburn stays on 2nd place on the ladder despite the loss. On Friday June 3rd the Cougars host East Perth Eagles at 6:30 pm at Wally Hagan Stadium, Home of the Cougars.

    Cougars D-feat Flames

Defense…Defense…The Cougars SBL squads were too much for the Flames this weekend in Rockingham. If defense wins championships then both Cougars teams might just have a chance come finals time.

The Lady Cougars crushed the Flames 88-47 behind dynamic sister duo Kara (24 points) and Cortney Hargreaves(19) at 100% from the field, and import Emma Pass maintained her MVP season with 14 points and 10 rebounds. The Cougars continue their playoff hopes with the victory, putting them 3 games safely in front of 9th place.

Grant ‘Wizard of Oz’ Davey wasn’t going to let his Cougars down in the Flames home opener. The captain doused the Flames with 5 three pointers in the 1st quarter that led to a lopsided 79-52 victory. In a game that two weeks ago ended in a 112-97 offensive fest, Steven Van Lit and the rest of the Cougars defense were able to hold Flame import Jeral Allen to just 9 points, two weeks earlier Allen score 43 against the Cougars. But the star of the night was Davey. He finished with 26 points and 8 assists leading the Cougars to 2nd place in the ladder and very close to securing a playoff spot this season. The Cougars are in action at Perth Redbacks next Saturday before hosting the East Perth Eagles at home on Friday June 3rd.

    Cougars Confused

The Cockburn Cougars men’s SBL team went 1-1 on the weekend. Saturday’s game against Perry Lakes will leave the Cougar’s confused for quite a while. A scoreboard error followed by several botched officiating calls in favor of the Hawks saw the men drop an overtime loss 110-107. At press time the Cougars were considering a protest to the game. Perry Lakes score bench awarded a three point shot for what the refs clearly called a two. The game, being televised by LMSC, should have resulted in a 1 point victory for the Cougars in regulation. Stan Ocitti (28 points) Ty Harrelson (24), and Grant Davey (20) led the way for the Cougars.
The Cougars had a quick turnaround which saw them jump out to as much as a 40 point lead against the Goldfield Giants in the Den. Harrelson (27), Ocitti (22), and Damian Scott (19) led the Cougars in scoring. The Cougars moved into 2nd place alone after the weekend and sport a 10-3 record.
In women’s action at Perry Lakes the Cougars dropped a tough loss to an experienced Hawks team 80-66. The leaders for the game were import Emma Pass (26) and Courtney Hargreaves (11). The Lady Cougars are still serious contenders for a top 8 finish which would put them into the playoffs. This Friday the Cougars take on the Rockingham Flames in a very winnable game as they won the first match up 105-33.

    Cougars Movin' on Up

The Lady Cougar's dominated their opponents this weekend going 2-0 and moving to 4th place in the league. First a big 66-51 win in Bunbury over the Southwest Slammers and then totally outplayed the Rockingham Flames 105-33 on Saturday night in the Den. A balanced attack for the team on Friday night saw import Emma Pass score 16 points, Kara Hargreaves 15 points and Courtney Hargreaves grabbed 14 rebounds. On Saturday the Hargreaves sisters lit up the scoreboard with 31 and 27 respectively while American import Nicole Johnson finished with 16.
In men’s action the Cougars came back from a 14 point deficit to defeat the Slammers on Friday.

“Wizard of Oz” Grant Davey nearly pulled off the first triple double of the season with 11 points, 11 rebounds, and 9 assists. Ty Harrelson poured in a game high 26 points including 7 in the last two and a half minutes as the Cougars won 82-76. Slammin Stan Ocitti (15 pts, 13 reb) and Damien Scott (13) rounded out the leaders. On Saturday night Sheldon McIntyre’s 29 points were too much for the Flames to handle. Ocitti (19pts, 18 reb) and Harrelson (24 pts, 7 reb, 7 assists) backed up the great team play by the Cougars who won 112-97 and moved back on top of the League Ladder.

This week the Cougar teams play at Perry Lakes Saturday at the WABC and the men will also host Goldfield Giants at home on Sunday at 12 pm.

    Cougars v Flames!

The Cougars will battle the Rockingham Flames this Saturday night. Both teams will look to bounce back after disappointing results against the Lakeside Lightning last Friday night. The womens game will see the Cougars take on a Flames team that have yet to win a game after losing many big name players from last year, including Courtney Hargreaves, who now proudly suits up as a Cougar. The Lady Cougars look to improve their playoff chances and need support from the fans. The womens game tips off at 6.00pm Saturday evening. The mens game will see the return of some familar faces to Cougarland, with the Flames being led by our former women’s coach Jason Smith. The game promises to be exciting. The Cougars look to continue their winning ways and protect the home court. The mens game tips off at 8.00pm.

    Cougars Claw Redbacks Twice

The Cockburn Cougars were too much for the Perth Redbacks behind a full house crowd on Saturday night at Wally Hagan Stadium. After trailing by eight at halftime the Lady Cougars used a huge 24-9 third quarter effort to win 70-65. Later the Cougars pounced on the Redbacks and never let them up as they won the contest 109-99.

Courtney Hargreaves dominated the game as she scored 18 points and grabbed 14 rebounds against the Lady Redbacks. Hargreaves was followed up by strong performances from Taryn Priestly (14 points), Kara Hargreaves (12), and import Emma Pass pulled down 10 rebounds. The Cougars now sit comfortably on 6 place with a 4-3 overall record. Last season the women won just 6 games. Head Coach Fleur McIntyre and the Lady Cougars play at Lakeside on Friday at 6pm as they continue their quest to make the finals.

In men’s action Stephen Charlton’s team held on to the top of the ladder by defeating a high powered attack from the Redbacks. The Cougars young talent was dominant for most of the game as Steven Van Lit (16 points) and Damien Scott (14 and 10 rebounds) provided excitement through the venue. Veterans Grant Davey (16 and 6 assists), Sheldon McIntyre (16), and Stan Ocitti’s (13 and 10 rebounds) outweighed another amazing performance by Redback sensation Adrian Majstrovich (35 and 17 reb). Ty Harrelson (22, 10 reb, 8 assists) just missed a triple-double for the Cougars as they look forward to their clash with the Lakeside Lightning Friday night at 8pm.
Lakeside currently sits on 2nd place but also sports just one loss on the season. The powerhouse Lightning will have to stop the Cougars balanced attack as these close foes battle it out for the top spot in the SBL!

    Cougars Sign Five for 2011

The excitement keeps building around Wally Hagan Stadium for the 2011 SBL Season. This week Cougars Men’s Basketball Team and Head Coach Stephen Charlton took a big step towards getting back in the finals after missing out last season. Grant Davey, Sheldon McIntyre, Steven Van Lit, and newcomer Ty Harrelson have all agreed to terms with the club.
    Sheldon McIntyre
On the Women’s side, Head Coach Fleur McIntyre has announced that 200 Game Life Member Vanessa Cahill will be suiting up this season. The long time team captain joined the Cougars as point guard at the age of 15. After taking last season off for her family, she is ready to get the Cougars back on track and help lead them into finals.
Grant Davey, team captain and long time Cockburn Cougar point guard will suit up another season for the Blue and Gold. Grant is on his way to 250 games for the Cougars with one goal in mind. “We had a young team last season,” Davey said, “but they all have experience in the league and this season there are no excuses. We want to make the finals.” With the floor generals knowledge of the game and experience it gives the Cougars a great chance to do just that. Last season Davey averaged 9.4 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 5.6 assists.
Sheldon McIntyre looks to improve on a solid season last year as the Cougars small forward position. He averaged 9.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.5 assists including a 23 point 12 rebound performance to finish last season strong. As the Cougars Vice-Captain the “Mac Attack” has the versatile skills allowing him to go inside and out. He also has strong basketball knowledge and feel for the game.
Talented youngster Steven Van Lit will look to step up his role as well. Last season the Cougar point guard averaged 26 minutes producing nearly 8 points and 3 assists per game. Van Lit is well known for his end of the game capabilities with two game winners in the final seconds last season. Steven also poured in 17 points in one quarter against SBL Champions Willetton on the road last season. His up tempo style and passing abilities will be important for the team this season.
Cockburn’s new Operations Manager, Ty Harrelson, will also suit up for the squad. He will bring a wealth of experience to the guard position after stints in Italy, Finland, Hungary, and several seasons in Germany. The club is extremely excited about Ty’s signing with the team in 2011.
The Cougars will look to improve on the 8-18 record and 12th place finish from last season. More signings are expected in the near future as the club wants to lock in the team as soon as possible. Come check out the Cougars Men’s and Women’s teams as they compete in the SBL starting in March.

     New Announcer season 2011

"MC" Preedy Set to Make SBL Debut

Dean "MC" Preedy has agreed with the Cockburn Basketball
Association to be the voice of the Cougars this season. The decision came after several meetings between Dean and the Association this preseason. Dean will take over as the Public Announcer at all home games for the Cougars SBL teams from Dave Nugent.

Dave Nugent, a life member of the CBA, will step aside after years of court announcing for the Cougars. The CBA would like to thank Dave for his commitment to the organization and professionalism on the sidelines.

A long time fan and player for the youth programs at Cockburn, Dean has valuable insight into the game of basketball and club history. After
attending last seasons SBL Men's and Women's games, Dean made the club aware that he maybe interested in the open position.

The club moved quickly to come to an agreement with "MC" Preedy in hopes that his enthusiasm will be contagious.

"We couldn't have asked for a more excited young man to join our club in this position," stated Tammy Van Lit, SBL Director at Cockburn. "We think Dean will contribute to the atmosphere in our stadium each game."

"The opportunity to be a part of the SBL program at Cockburn is great,"
Preedy stated, "Each home game will be an event and I would like to create and upbeat atmosphere for both Cougar teams. Not only for the teams, but I want the community to be involved every game. I am excited, the fans will be excited, and together we will create energy for our team."

Come check out Dean this season as he helps lead the Cougars in action!
